About

Born in Belgium. Rooted in Mexico City.

After travelling around the world for several years, Belgian-born singer-songwriter Tina Laere settled in Mexico City, where she has lived for more than 15 years.

Her repertoire — in both English and Spanish — reflects her multicultural background and blends indie-folk, blues, and soul. Her songs invite listeners into an intimate world of warm vocals and lyrical sensitivity, where melancholy, enchantment, sadness, and self-mockery coexist in constant harmony.

Music isn’t her profession. Tina works full-time in education and shares a small apartment in Mexico City with her kid and two dogs — the songs get written in between, often on long walks through the city.

Influences

Tracy Chapman, Natalie Merchant, Sting

Sound

Indie-folk, blues and soul, in English and Spanish

Themes

Love and heartbreak, disenchantment, the passing of time

The road so far

Tina only discovered singing and songwriting well into her twenties. After a false start with the short-lived Tinaco Banda, she shelved the idea of being a musician as a pipe dream — until, more than ten years later, in 2023, it became clear that her path had to run through music.

She picked up the guitar again, dusted off forgotten notebooks and went back to chasing that “whim” — part-time, or quarter-time, really. She has been learning (and still is) not only to sing and play again, but to find her way around Mexico City’s music scene and its people, to live on social media (bwaaahh) and, above all, to define her voice as a songwriter.

Starting out at open mics, she has since played rooms across the city — Terraza Cineteca, Cocoliche (Jazz de las Ocho), El Breve Espacio, Centenario 107, Nola Jazz Club, Bodet Bistró and El Hijo del Cuervo among them — and in December 2024 appeared as guest artist at El Cantoral, in front of an audience of 800. Four songs from that night are out as live singles.

She is still searching: for her sound, her people, her audience. She has stumbled and wanted to give up, but keeps coming back to the same certainty — music has to be part of her life.

As for the songs: like a good Northern European, she lets melancholy creep in. Love and heartbreak (how could they not), existential disenchantment, the passing of time and how fleeting life is — and, running through it all, the beauty of the moments worth remembering.

Her debut EP, All One Can’t Say, produced by Toronto-based Joel Schwartz, is coming out one song at a time: Don’t Believe Anymore (October 2026), Bathwater (November 2026) and What a Way (January 2027).
